Sustainable Initiative of The Year 2020
In January, the Retail Industry Awards named LIDL GB’s launch of fish packaging, manufactured by Sharpak with the inclusion of Prevented Ocean Plastic, supplied by Bantam Materials, Sustainable Initiative of The Year 2020.
This achievement recognises the hard work of Bantam Materials’ and its partners: Lidl GB, Sharpak – Groupe Guillin, Copernus and OceanCycle. The Prevented Ocean Plastic programme offers a Better Plastic Choice to consumers and supports bottle collectors in coastal communities of developing countries, whilst ultimately helping to protect our oceans.
Raffi Schieir, Director of Bantam Materials, the supplier of Prevented Ocean Plastic, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Lidl GB, Sharpak and Group GUILLIN and to have this innovation recognised. The market leading Prevented Ocean Plastic programme is focused on stopping plastic reaching and polluting our oceans.
“By realising the value of plastic bottles, we can improve our environment and support coastal communities – providing a reliable income option. Plastic recycling is a rapidly growing industry and we’re proud to be working at the forefront, setting standards, and helping to create a closed loop plastic economy.”
In 2020, Lidl GB was the first supermarket to launch packaging using Prevented Ocean Plastic in their own-label fish products. Following its success, Lidl grew its offering to include their poultry range. You can now buy both fish and poultry items with the Prevented Ocean Plastic mark at Lidl GB stores.
