New life for plastic waste

Less fossil resources for new adhesive tape

German tape manufacturer monta Klebebandwerk GmbH has developed a sustainable self-adhesive tape based on industrial plastic waste. The new tape „monta reTec 831“ with natural rubber adhesive has been designed to securely seal medium heavy to heavy boxes. The film backing is made entirely of European Post Industrial Recyclate (PIR): As a result, the raw materials utilized have a carbon footprint that is 33% lower than conventional BOPP plastic adhesive tape.

The calls for increased use of plastic recyclate coupled with the dynamic progress in recycling technologies gave the impulse for the product concept, up to the naming of monta “reTec” 831. The production of polypropylene film generates plastic waste that was previously discarded. monta has turned it into a useful product: Plastic waste is processed into 100 percent post-industrial recycled polypropylene at the film manufacturer’s facility and utilized as a carrier for the monta reTec 831 adhesive tape. At monta, it is then coated with natural rubber adhesive, which meets the technical requirements even for difficult surfaces or extreme environments, such as in deep-freeze areas.

Less is more

Resource preservation is not only an issue when it comes to the selection of raw materials, but also in the application of adhesive tapes. Adhesive tapes with good adhesive strength and high tear strength usually seal with just one layer. If adhesive tapes must be applied in multiple layers to achieve the desired properties, this results in a significant increase in material consumption. Another aspect of sustainability is the disposal of adhesive tape in cardboard recycling: Well-known paper and cardboard manufacturers, as well as recycling service providers, have confirmed to monta that adhesive tapes such as monta reTec 831 are completely detached from cardboard, and do not disrupt the cardboard recycling process.

Product range grows greener

Conserving resources is important, also in the packaging industry, where 30 billion square meters of adhesive tape are used each year. By the end of 2019, monta had already developed a 90 percent bio-based adhesive tape made of renewable raw materials, marking the beginning of its sustainable monta Greenline product line. With the new PIR recyclate adhesive tape monta has added another high-performance plastic adhesive tape to its environmentally friendly portfolio. monta has gone one step further and has been compensating CO2 emissions for all monta Greenline adhesive tapes since August 2021: By supporting recognised climate protection projects that are accredited to international standards, monta now offers a “climate-neutral” product range.
